10 things happening in the surf and ocean that you should know.

  1. A Durban sea kayaker had a narrow escape with a Great White Shark while fishing off Westbrook beach, KwaZulu-Natal. He was bumped into the water, and luckily his companion was around to help him get back on the kayak before the shark had another visit. His kayak didn’t get away unscathed though.
  2. World champion freediver Hanli Prinsloo recently shared this image of Sea Dragons found in the Kalk Bay tidal pool – incredible!
  3. Three whales have beached around South African waters this December. An Orca, which was safely escorted back to sea a few days before, was recently found dead on rocks in Plettenberg Bay. Not long after, two humpback whales washed ashore, one in Strand and one in Kommetjie. Investigations into what caused the death of the whales are now undergo.
  4. The Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town is currently hosting a Mola-Mola (better known as a Sunfish) in its main tank. This guy was apparently found near the V&A Waterfront, rather disorientated. Rumour has it loads of these guys have been spotted swimming in the warmer waters we’ve been having in False Bay.
  5. Scary news out of the Orange River region: tour operators in the area are cancelling their New Year bookings due to there being NO water. Water restrictions are a real thing, people.
  6. In surf news, Mick Fanning’s mom has spoken out about his brother Peter’s death. Sad news for Mick and his family, considering he previously lost another brother in a car accident.
  7. One of my favourite surf forecasting sites, windguru, have just unveiled their nifty new platform (in beta version), which includes a live wind reading, graph views and clickable reports.
  8. If you’re on Facebook, and you enjoy sharing surf shots, you’ll want to head on over to the M@king Waves group and enter the Zigzag Magazine Shootout.
  9. Big Wave surfer and all-round waterman Shane Dorian shared this video of himself enjoying a swim after his jetski decided to break down at a pretty inconvenient time.
  10. Bodysurfing, anyone? Nuts.
