It’s kind of a strange thing to consider, but surfers are not naturally comfortable being underwater. Being underwater is a negative experience, usually associated with a heavy beating or a need to duck dive. The best surfers are the ones who spend time free diving or body surfing, and learning to be comfortable with the thunderous clouds that break around you when you’re down there.
